ABOUT THE EVENT

A COMMUNITY RACE SUPPORTING CHINATOWN YOUTH.

The Chinatown 5K was originally organized in the 1970’s by George Cheung, a community leader, an ultra marathoner, and owner of the Junk Restaurant on Archer Avenue along with his wife Celia. In honor of George’s contribution to the Chinatown community, the portion of Archer Avenue between Wentworth and Princeton Avenue is now named the Honorary George Cheung Way.

In 1999, Anita and James Luk started the Chinatown 5K & Youth Run, and for 18 years, they brought joy to the community and helped showcase our unique neighborhood. Runners started on Archer Avenue across from the Chinatown Square, then ran onto Wentworth through the iconic gateway, through Chinatown, all the way south to Guaranteed Rate Field, home of the Chicago White Sox, and back to the finish on Archer.

In 2025, Project: VISION brought back the Chinatown 5K & Youth Run to raise funds in support of free after school youth programs, including tutoring, mentoring, college readiness, civic engagement, and workforce development, serving over 400 youth in the community. Through the Chinatown 5K, we aim to build community from within, showcase the welcoming and vibrant spirit of Chinatown, and strengthen connections with our neighbors.

Project: VISION’s mission is to help youth in Chicago’s Greater Chinatown community reach their full potential by providing them with tools for educational, personal, and civic development.

Since 2003, Project: VISION has empowered over 2,000 underprivileged Asian American youth in Chicago through free educational and leadership development programs. Serving students in grades 6-12, PV provides tutoring, ACT/SAT prep, career readiness workshops, and leadership training to help students succeed academically and build essential life skills. The organization also fosters social responsibility through service projects and mentorship opportunities, equipping students with the confidence and tools to achieve their goals and give back to their communities. Last year alone, PV served a record 460 students, delivering over 87,000 hours of tutoring, mentorship, and career readiness services. These programs continue to inspire students to succeed, grow, and contribute to brighter futures for themselves and their communities.
